How to Test Your Surge Protector

Surge protectors are important to have, especially if you are using any expensive electronic devices. In fact, you probably have your computer plugged into one. Many people do not realize that these surge protectors need to be tested frequently to ensure they are operating properly. Therefore, it is useful to know how to test your surge protector.
First: Power tester
Use a power tester to check the outlet in which the surge protector is plugged. They are found at home improvement stores at a low cost. Usually a light is included to let you know if the outlet is working properly.
Second: Inspect for damage
Using one surge protector at a time, begin unplugging the devices plugged into the protector. Inspect the surge protector carefully for any cracking or other types of damage such as singed areas.
Third: Test operation
Make sure your surge protector is plugged into an outlet. Check to see that the red light is on which indicates power is being received. Also, test the switch on the protector. If either of these does not work, then you need to replace the protector. If your surge protector fails this step, you can stop with your test.
Fourth: Test the outlets on the protector
Using your power tester, begin checking each outlet on the surge protector to ensure that it is operating correctly. They should go off when you flip the switch and they should come back on when you turn the switch back. Go through and complete this process until you've check all the outlets on the surge protector. Again, if any of these fail, it is time to get a new protector.
