New or Used Power Adapters?

February 17, 2012

Power adapters supply consumers with the power needed to fuel their electronics. There are thousands of different types of power adapters, and they all do the same job of supplying electricity to products so they are functional and usable. When these products fail or are misplaced, damaged or stolen, the consumer is faced with the decision of locating an adapter for their product. The consumer must choose between a new power adapter and a used one.

There are many advantages and disadvantages for both. Price can play a huge factor in deciding which adapter the consumer picks. A new adapter can cost twice or even three times as much as a used one. However, the benefit of purchasing a new adapter is that a manufacturer's warranty is included on it. Many consumers can pick up a used adapter for much less, but most do not include a warranty on the product.

New power adapters are likely to last for many years to come. If they are faulty, the warranty usually covers the damage, and it is easily replaced. When purchasing a used power adapter, the consumer is unaware of how long the product was utilized. The remaining life on it could range from a few weeks to years. However, many users are very happy when purchasing used adapters because of the affordability.

Consumers should weigh the pros and cons and find the adapter that best suits their needs. Cost and longevity are the most important factors when determining which is the best buy.

  • Absolutely agreed that cost plays a huge factor in the purchase of a used or new power adapter, but sadly the consumer in this case is taking a large risk. Getting a new adapter implies (I assume so at least) that the purchase is from an authorized or reputable store, so not only do you get the warranty, but you also know for sure that the power supply is going to work with the product it is designed for. A used power supply may be a shoddy "fake" power supply, which may work for a week, month, or even a year, but when it fails, chances are it will pull your electronics down with it, and since it did not come with a warranty or from a reputable store, you cannot take either the company that made your product or the store to court for damages. It may be cheaper, but it is more risky. - someonecool on 3/23/2012
